A pair of sublime pieces, "To be sung of a summer night on the water" were originally unaccompanied part-songs written for wordless chorus in the late spring of 1917. They was also later rearranged to form 2 Aquarelles for String Orchestra.
Here they are translated for 3 flutes and 2 Clarinets. In the first movement the serene melody meanders through the lush chromatic texture, while the second is slightly more lively, featuring a jaunty folk tune.
